Description
Writing to his wife, Margaret in Bucksport, Capt. Charles Barnard, commanding Co. A of the 14th Maine Infantry, told her not to be alarmed that the letterhead on which he was writing read "Confederate States of America Medical Director's Office, New Orleans."
Barnard wrote, "It is only a little plunder from the Humbug Concern. We appropriate all property that belongs to the late government."
Union forces had captured and were occupying New Orleans and other parts of Louisiana.
Barnard enlisted in December 1861 at age 46 and served until August 1868.
