Description
This picture was taken of the "246", which was the last train headed out of Princeton on July 22, 1933. The Lewy's Island Railroad first came to Princeton in 1857 as an extension of the Calais and Baring Railroad. During its years of operation, the train ran daily on this track carrying freight and passengers.
The railway was reorganized as the St. Croix and Penobscot Railroad in 1870. Later it became a branch of the Washington County Railroad and in 1904 Maine Central Railroad gained controlling stock. As the mills in Princeton and "below" closed down or burned, the freight was picked up by gasoline powered trucks thus crippling the economy of the railroad north of Baileyville. The line was terminated in 1933.
