Alba Court Inn, New Smyrna, Florida, ca. 1908

Contributed by Mount Desert Island Historical Society

Description

The Alba Court Inn, built in 1906 in New Smyrna Florida, was managed by the Savage Family of Northeast Harbor for some of its first years of business. Herman LaFritz Savage and his wife "Mina" were the managers of the Inn. Other family members, including Herman's mother Emily Manchester Savage, his sister Cora Savage Phillips, brother George A. Savage, and niece Emily Phillips Reynolds pitched in to help during some of the years that they managed the Inn.

Other members of the family, including Charles K. Savage, George A. Savage, Jr., and their mother, Mabelle, also intermittently visited the New Smyrna area from 1906 through about 1918 and more than likely stayed at the Alba Court Inn. Operating hotels, inns, and restaurants in Maine during the summer and then in the winter in Florida was a way of life for the Savage family and other families in the resort and hotel business in Maine.
