Description

John Marshall Brown, stationed at Folly Island, South Carolina, near Charleston, reports to his sister, Nellie (Ellen) in Portland that he has "actually been in a fight. It seems very strange after all the monotony of our life down here."

He gave no details but told her his letter to their mother contained more information.

He said he suspected the troops would have little to do for some time. He reported that the "negro troops on this island have been sent to join Genl Seymours Expedition to Florida and all the troops that are left will probably be needed for the defense and daily routine of this island."
