Description
Sumner S. Richards of Saco was a machinist before enlisting as a sergeant in the 17th Maine's Co. I. He became a 2nd lieutenant in December 1862, a 1st lieutenant in August 1863, and captain of Co. K in March 1864.
He was wounded at Spotsylvania on May 11, 1864 and was discharged due to disability.
He returned to Saco after the war and worked as a machinist.
