Surgeon Nahum Hersom, 17th Maine, ca. 1863

Description

Nahum Alvah Hersom of Sanford (1835-1881) was commissioned as surgeon of the 17th Maine Infantry on Nov. 4, 1863. He served until June 4, 1865.

He had been assistant surgeon of the 20th Maine from Aug. 9, 1862 until his promotion to surgeon in the 17th Maine.

Hersom, a graduate of Parsonsfield Seminary and Lebanon Academy, studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1861. He practiced medicine in Portland starting in 1872.

After his death, while on a trip to Ireland, his wife, S. Jane Lord Hersom studied medicine and set up a practice in Portland.
