Description
Vera Cleaves, age 8, sat in her grandfather, George E. Cleaves, Sr.'s lap. His boat, a one lunger, was docked in the Sasanoa River off the shore of his camp.
Vera's brother, Paul, is the other child in the boat. He is believed to be sitting beside his "Uncle Will", William Scott. The men in the back of the boat are unidentified.
Vera and her brother began visiting their grandparents' camp when she was eight years old. In the early years, they took a steamboat from Quincy, Massachusetts to the Lower Landing and hiked into the cabin. When they first arrived at the camp, her grandfather dug a hole to make a "refrigerator" where he would stow their food -- usually a ham and her grandmother's baked beans. Later, he brought in ice. There was no electricity or inside plumbing. In Vera's words, "the living was simple, the surroundings were beautiful, and the air was clean."
