Description
Sculptor Benjamin Paul Akers (1825-1861) of Westbook made this plaster bust of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882), the noted poet who was born and raised in Portland.
On July 18, 1851, in a letter to his brother Alexander W. Longfellow, Henry Longfellow wrote, "I am glad you think so well of the bust. Akers has certainly very great merit in this way. I wish I could afford to have it done in marble; but alas! I cannot."
