Description
An archaeological dig at 47 Brown Street in Portland in 2008 discovered a number of items found in an old privy. Among those was this piece of black transfer print ware soup plate.
Manufactured by Ralph Hall & Co. of Tunstall, Stoke on Trent, England, this piece probably dates to 1830. While blue-on-white transfer printing began in 1775, other colors, including black, were not intro ducted until 1828.
The design is part of Hall's "Italian Buildings" series, made for export.
