Description
Anne Longfellow Pierce added running water to her house on Congress Street in Portland in 1894.
She had a single cold-water faucet for the kitchen sink.
Pierce, the sister of poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, declined to update the family homestead, built by her grandfather in 1785-1786. When Pierce died, she left the house to the Maine Historical Society as a memorial to her brother.
