Lucia Wadsworth, Portland, ca. 1862

Contributed by NPS, Longfellow House-Washington's Headquarters National Historic Site

Description

Lucia Wadsworth (1784-1864) was the fifth of Peleg and Elizabeth Bartlett Wadsworth's 10 children. Lucia, who remained single, spent most of her life in the Wadsworth-Longfellow house on Congress Street, which her father built in 1785.

Known as "Aunt Lucia," she lived in the house with her sister and brother-in-law Stephen and Zilpah Longfellow, helping to raise their eight children and run the household. She remained in the house with her niece, Anne Longfellow Pierce, a widow.

The photograph was made on the occasion of her 79th birthday, about 1862, several years before her death.
