Description
Anne Longfellow Pierce (1810-1901) was the fourth child of Stephen and Zilpha Longfellow. She married George Washington Pierce, a lawyer from Baldwin who had studied with her father, in 1832.
Pierce died from typhus three years later, in 1835. Anne Pierce moved back into her childhood home, the Wadsworth-Longfellow House on Congress Street in Portland.
When her parents died in 1849 and 1851, she and her aunt Lucia Wadsworth inherited the house. Anne became the final resident of the house. On her death in 1901, she donated the house to the Maine Historical Society to operate as a museum honoring her family and, especially, her brother Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
