Description
In an undated letter, probably written in 1845, Eunice Sewall and her grandmother, Eunice Day, wrote from Portland to Kiah and Lucretia Day Sewall in Mobile, Alabama.
Eunice Sewall, who was born in Portland in 1837, was staying with her grandmother and attending school in Maine. The rest of Sewall's family lived in Mobile, where they moved in 1838. Eunice wrote to her parents about her studies and activities.
Eunice Day wrote about various friends in Portland, and about her own activities trying to keep up various buildings she owned. Her husband, Ezekiel Day, had died in 1842. Day wrote, "Our buildings are all old and are constantly wanting repairs. and there is no one now to superintend but me.
Kiah Sewall moved to Mobile for his health and also for business prospects. He studied law in New York City, but, after graduating from Bowdoin College had incurred serious debts in land speculation in Maine.
