Description
Kiah B. Sewall wrote from Mobile to his daughter Eunice in Portland about the family's discussions on what to name his new baby -- a boy born on Oct. 30, 1855.
Eunice (1836-1918), the oldest child of Kiah and Lucretia Day Sewall, had suggested "Arthur," her mother thought the child should be named after his father, and Kiah Sewall liked the name "Samuel."
Sewall noted he was named for a Vermont minister, the Rev. Kiah Bayley. Eventually, the Sewalls named the baby Samuel Bayley Sewall.
Kiah Sewall also discussed books that he thought Eunice should read. Kiah and Lucretia Sewall, both natives of Maine, had lived in Mobile since 1839. Eunice was largely educated in Maine and Lucretia and the other children often returned to Maine in the summer and fall.
