Description
Writing to his eldest daughter, Eunice Sewall (1837-1918), in Portland, Kiah B. Sewall, a Maine native who was living and working as a lawyer in Mobile, discussed the education of his daughter Ellen (1841-1872).
He wrote that he and his wife, Lucretia Day Sewall, had decided Ellen should study at Pittsfield. But, he wrote, "The great obstacle is the expense ..." He asked Eunice to find out more about the academies at Bridgton and Bethel -- or others.
Sewall moved to Mobile in 1839. His wife and children often spent summers and falls in Maine and some of the children were educated in Maine. Eunice, the only of the Sewall children to be born in Maine, spent most of her childhood years in Portland with her grandmother Day.
