Description
Kiah B. Sewall, a Maine native who was a lawyer in Mobile, Alabama, wrote to Senator William H. Seward in February 1860 to express his disappointment that Seward had not provided expected legal advice in a case Sewall had before the U.S. Supreme Court.
The case, Collins v. Thompson, was decided in December 1859, against Sewall and his client, Collins.
Sewall argued the case himself, but had expected Seward to do so. The case involved a fraudulently acquired deed and Supreme Court Justice John A. Campbell had an interest in the case.
The letter is a copy Sewall kept.
