Description
William Dean Howells, who had become editor of the Atlantic Monthly about eight months earlier, wrote to Eunice D. Sewall (1837-1918) of Portland in September 1866, rejecting a piece of writing she had submitted to the magazine.
Howells apparently had met Sewall and apologized for sending a rejection letter. He noted that he had sent a check for one of Sewall's sisters for a piece the magazine had published.
Eunice Sewall, who was born in Portland, was the eldest of 10 children of Kiah B. and Lucretia Day Sewall. The family lived in Mobile, Alabama, from 1839 to 1865, although Eunice Sewall and several siblings were largely educated in Maine, and many family members spent summers in Portland.
