Description
This cap belonged to Freeland Salmon Holmes, who was a doctor in Foxcroft. When the Civil War broke out, he volunteered at the age of 33, leaving Foxcroft to serve as a surgeon in the 6th Regiment of Maine Volunteers.
Holmes died from diphtheria at a camp in Germantown, Virginia on June 23, 1863. He left behind his wife, Caroline Ann Washburn of Livermore, and their two children.
