Description
Freeland S. Holmes worked as a doctor in Foxcroft. He married Caroline Ann Washburn of Livermore in 1857. At the age of 33, Holmes left Foxcroft to volunteer for service in the 6th Maine Regiment during the Civil War.
Civil War physicians wore green sashes like this one to show their status as a doctor, indicating their duty to care for all soldiers during the war. For ceremonial occasions, doctors wore the sash from the shoulder to the opposite hip; during regular service it was wrapped around the waist.
