Description
The Rev. David James of Greenport, Long Island, New York, wrote to Capt. James Brackett of Bangor about the discovery of a vein of slate "near Bangor."
Brackett had written to James, apparently at the request of Moses Greenleaf of Williamsburg, who discovered the vein. James noted that he was an expert on slate as he had learned the business from his father, but he had taken up the gospel and would not personally visit the vein to examine it.
He asked for information about its size and sought a sample of the slate.
