Description
Capt. James Brackett of Bangor wrote a brief cover note to Moses Greenleaf (1777-1834) of Bangor. He enclosed a letter from the Rev. David James of Long Island, New York, about the discovery of a vein of slate in the Brownville-Williamsburg area.
Greenleaf, who moved to Williamsburg in 1811 and who was a noted cartographer, promoted economic development in Maine, including the slate discovered in Williamsburg.
Greenleaf surveyed and mapped much of Maine and promoted Maine's independence from Massachusetts.
