Description
The Rev. David James of Greenport, Long Island, NY, wrote to Moses Greenleaf in Williamsburg in response to Greenleaf's inquiries about slate quarrying.
Greenleaf had died shortly before receiving this response to a previous letter.
James advised Greenleaf to begin the quarry operation slowly, and approved his plan to find a qualified operator from Wales, where James and his family had been in the slate mining business. He also advised that the quarry worker should provide his own tools when he came to the U.S.
Because of Greenleaf's death, the quarry was not opened.
