Israel Washburn Jr. recommendation for Charles Washburn, Portland, 1863

Description

Israel Washburn Jr. recommended Charles Washburn for a clerkship at Washington, D.C. in 1863. After serving two terms as Maine's 29th Governor during the Civil War, Israel became collector of customs of the Port of Portland from 1863 to 1877.

Charles Washburn, who is featured in this letter is not Israel's brother, but possibly a cousin from another Maine town. This recommendation became a point of contention for Israel Washburn, since Charles was not hired for the clerkship, and Israel later wrote about his frustration in subsequent letters.
