Freeland Holmes and Caroline Holmes, Foxcroft, ca. 1860

Description

Freeland Salmon Holmes married Caroline Ann Washburn on June 3, 1857 in the parlor of Washburn's family home in Livermore. They lived in Foxcroft, where Holmes was born and raised and had established a medical practice.

Holmes served as a surgeon with the 6th Regiment of Maine Volunteers during the Civil War. He died from diphtheria while in a camp near Germantown, Virginia, on June 23, 1863. He is buried at Rural Grove Cemetery in Dover-Foxcroft.
