Description
Samuel Washburn wrote to his brother Elihu Washburne in 1862. During the Civil War Samuel Washburn served as an officer on the U.S. Navy gunboat Galena.
Washburn discussed the Battle of Chancellorsville, which took place in Virginia, and mentions the death of Stonewall Jackson. Washburn included information about the 4,000 Confederate soldiers of the 11th Corps who were taken prisoner.
Samuel Washburn concluded the letter by discussing the hardship of the troops and fighting under poor weather conditions.
