Description

Elisha F. Goddard served in Company A of the 12th Maine Regiment during the Civil War.

Goddard was born October 15, 1836, and at age 23, he enlisted on November 1, 1861, as quarter master sergeant. He was promoted to full 1st lieutenant, and later to captain of Company A.

Goddard was mustered out on April 18, 1866, and returned home to his Rumford Point farm. He was killed on December 3, 1872 in a logging accident, which was witnessed by William "Napoleon" Thomas, a former slave who moved to Maine from New Orleans with Goddard after the Civil War, when Thomas was just 16 years old.
