Description
Due largely to the railroad's presence, Bethel developed into a thriving commercial center by the end of the nineteenth century.
Several stores, repair shops and public services--including communication to the outside world via the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company--were available near the junction of upper Main Street with Broad and Church streets.
