Description
Israel Washburn Jr. wrote to his brother Elihu Washburne about attacks on Republicanism and support for William Seward. As Governor of Maine during the first years of the Civil War, Israel Washburn relied on his brother, Elihu Washburne, who was a Congressman from Illinois, for news about Washington, D.C.
Israel Washburn served two terms as governor and is referred to as "Maine's little known giant of the Civil War," a title earned by raising a significant amount of troops, volunteers, arms, and equipment for Maine's War effort.
