Description
Samuel Benjamin Washburn wrote his brother, Illinois Congressman Elihu Washburne, about reporting for duty as a sailor during the Civil War, and his desire to be placed on the USS Iroquois.
Samuel Washburn left Livermore and joined the merchant marines in 1842, sailing between Boston, Liverpool, and New Orleans. He later moved to Waubeck, Wisconsin to work at a sawmill owned by his brothers.
During the Civil War Samuel Washburn worked as Acting Master for the U.S. Navy and became an officer on the ironclad gunboat USS Galena. He was wounded in the hip at the battle of Fort Darling.
Samuel Washburn died on March 4, 1890 in Avon Springs, New York.
