Description
Israel Washburn wrote his brother, Congressman Elihu Washburne, about purchasing bank shares in his name. He took that opportunity to express concern about Congress listening to "tories" and a possible compromise in the Civil War. Washburn called the so-called tories "traitors," and indicated they should be avoided "like reptiles".
Israel Washburn Jr. (1813-1883) was the eldest son of Israel and Martha "Patty" Benjamin Washburn. Born and raised in Livermore, he studied law with his uncle Reuel Washburn and passed the Maine bar in Orono in 1834.
Elected to the Maine House of Representatives in 1842, Israel continued his political career with his election to Congress in 1851. From 1861 to 1863 he served as Maine's Civil War governor.
President Lincoln appointed Washburn as Collector of the Port of Portland in 1863, a position he held until 1877. Israel died in Philadelphia on May 12, 1883 and is buried at the Mount Hope Cemetery in Bangor.
