Description
Maine State Senator Edward Denny's wife, Inez, prepares to cut the ribbon at the dedication of the causeway connecting Westport Island with Wiscasset. Pictured with her (left to right) are the members of the Westport-Wiscasset Bridge District: John Swanton, Westport; Harry Mosher, Wiscasset; Edward Denny, Chair, Damariscotta; Edwin Cromwell, Westport; and C.J. DiPerri, Wiscasset.
When the cost of a badly-needed bridge between Westport Island and Wiscasset proved too expensive for the state, given the Island's small population, two off-Island men championed another less-expensive solution: a causeway.
One of those men, Senator Edward Denny, helped push the legislature to authorize a Westport-Wiscasset Bridge Commission, which he later presided over. The Bridge Commission oversaw the construction of a $300,000 580-foot causeway with a toll. The causeway opened on May 1, 1950 and was officially dedicated on June 25.
