Description
State Senator Edward B. Denny, Jr., of Damariscotta (pictured speaking) served as master of ceremonies at the dedication of the Westport Island causeway. Many credited Senator Denny as the driving force behind the construction of the causeway connecting Westport to the Wiscasset mainland.
Newspapers reported that 400 to 500 people gathered on the Wiscasset side for the Sunday afternoon dedication of the bridge.
Westport had been without a bridge since 1893 when the bridge built in 1840 was destroyed by ice. After 1893 and until 1950, Islanders relied on a cable ferry that could hold two normal size cars to connect them to the mainland.
