Causeway Dedication Dinner, Westport Island, 1950

Contributed by Westport Island History Committee

Description

A celebratory shore dinner followed the June 25th dedication of the Westport Island Causeway at the island's historic town hall. Members of the Westport-Wiscasset Bridge District, invited dignitaries, project engineers and residents celebrated a new dawn in access to the mainland.

Westport had been without a bridge since 1893 when the bridge built in 1840 was destroyed by ice. After 1893, and until 1950, Islanders relied on a cable ferry that could hold two normal size cars to connect them to Wiscasset.

Westport Island's Town Hall, the former Union Meeting House, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. The Union Meeting house was built by 1794 and adapted to a Town Hall in 1885 when much of the interior was renovated for its new purpose.

This photograph was taken from the stage looking towards the front balcony, front door and small kitchen area on the left.
