Description
At the conclusion of dignitaries' speeches, which officially marked the opening of the Westport Island causeway, gathered pedestrians and vehicles paraded across the causeway. They were celebrating the Island's first "bridge" connecting Westport with the mainland since 1893.
The causeway ran about 580 feet between Cushman Point in Wiscasset and the Eaton property on the north end of Westport Island. An opening in the causeway was framed with 75-foot steel beams allowing water to flow with the changing tides.
Fill would have been installed the entire length of the causeway, but the War Department felt it advisable to allow for the passage of small-boat traffic beneath the causeway. Small boats, no higher than 9 feet, could pass with skillful navigation at low tide when the gap beneath the steel span was about 32 feet wide.
