Description
The Westport Island Causeway which was officially opened on June 25, 1950, seen from an aerial view. The causeway replaced a two-car cable ferry that had been the primary means for traveling on and off the Island since 1893.
Westport's causeway crossed the Cowseagan Narrows, running from Cushman Point in Wiscasset on the mainland to the north end of the island's Main Road. A toll keeper collected a 55 cent toll on the Westport side of the causeway until 1955 when the State Highway Commission took it over, and it became a "free" bridge.
The photographer, F. Dike Mason, and his wife owned a summer retreat on Westport and retired to a full-time life on Westport in 1979.
