Description
This portrait is of Henry and Lucy Knox's fourth child, Marcus Camillus. Believed to be a child of great promise, the Knox's were distraught when he died from an accident at school at the age of eight. This portrait was painted by Joseph Wright in 1791, and the fact that the painting was paid for after the boy's death has led to speculation that it was done while the boy was laid out. Of thirteen children born to the Knox's, only three made it to adulthood.
