Description
At the beginning of the Civil War, Dr. Nathaniel Tuckerman True organized the Bethel Zouaves, a militia company that included Gould Academy students as well as scholars attending the Highland School for Boys.
Most of the teenagers standing at attention on Main Street in Bethel are in civilian dress, but Dr. True, their commanding officer, wears a military sash and belt and holds a sword. It's likely that some of these young Zouaves saw service in the Union Army before the war ended.
