Description
In May of 1794 General Henry Knox purchased "12 oval back'd white color'd armchairs with mahogany arms" from William Cox in Philadelphia. These were among the items that furnished Montpelier, the mansion Knox built in Thomaston.
The chairs bear the stamp of both Cox and Joseph Henzey, another Philadelphia chairmaker.
When Knox's last child passed away in 1854 much of the furniture in Montpelier was sold at auction. Many of the pieces remained in the Thomaston area and were given to the Knox Memorial Association when they built a replica of Montpelier in 1930.
Montpelier has seven of the original 12 chairs.
