Description

This image shows four buildings located on the north side of Main Street near the downtown center of Dixfield in the early 1950s.

From left to right the buildings are: the large brick Harlow Block that at one time housed the Stanley Hotel; the Rafuse Garage; the Town Office; and the Ludden building. None of these buildings exist in 2015.

The Harlow Block, built in 1878, was razed in 1980 and replaced by Bangor Savings Bank. The garage became Norris Antiques and then Towle's Corner Store in 2008. The Town Office building is the site of the Dixfield Fire Department, completed in 1966. The Ludden building and land was donated by Verdurina Ludden to the Town of Dixfield to become the site for a library, in memory of her parents, Luther H. and Arvilla Ludden. The Ludden Memorial Library was erected in 1966 with an expansion completed in 2000.
