Morrison Farm, Dixfield, 1986

Contributed by Dixfield Historical Society

Description

The Morrison Farm is located east of Dixfield Village and just off US Route 2. Thomas Hiscock built the original farmhouse around 1819, which was a center chimney cape style house.

The long hill leading up to this land has had a succession of names--originally known as Hiscock Hill, then Towle Hill (for George Towle), and from the 1900s on, Morrison Hill.

Col. John Hosley, from Livermore owned the farm in the 1850s and later, his grandson Fred Morrison around 1880. The center chimney was removed when a second story was added to the farmhouse around 1900. As of 2016, wainscoting remains on each wall flanking the original fireplace space; it is constructed of a single board of wood approximately three feet wide.

Michael Towle, descendant of Anna Jackson Towle Hiscock, helped Earl Morrison cut steel posts to place in concrete forms for the construction of a new foundation for the barn around 1960.
