Description
William D. Blake, a retired sea captain, served for many years as the Normal School’s janitor. He was a man of strong work ethic, and was involved with the school beyond caring for Merrill Hall. Blake helped the Campfire Girls learn knot tying skills and was an active participant in the Modern Authors Club.
Affectionately referred to as “Cap” or “Cap’n Blake,” he is described in the 1923 yearbook as being a favorite of the students and having “a friendly smile and cheery word, and a bit of homely advice for those who will accept it.”
Blake worked at the school from 1914 until his untimely death in January, 1929.
