Description
"This gate I have designed for my own special benefit," John Martin, a Bangor accountant and shopkeeper wrote on page 14 of his "Scrap Book No 3" in which he drew designs eight gates for various uses.
He continued that he would use the design, "if ever I am so lucky as to build one again and should be compelled to use wooden posts." He noted that he preferred granite and his design no 8 is a similar gate with granite posts.
Martin wrote and illustrated five volumes between 1864 and 1899 of reminiscences and commentary on his life and times in the Bangor area.
