Description
Born in England, Button Gwinnett moved his family to America in the 1760s in search of a brighter future. Active in politics, he served on the General Assembly in Savannah, and represented Georgia at the Second Continental Congress.
Gwinnett worked with fellow Georgia representative Lyman Hall for independence. Gwinnett voted for independence on July 2, and signed the Declaration on August 2, 1776.
This deed is one of only a handful of known surviving Gwinnett signatures. It records the sale of Gwinnet's property on the Island of Saint Catherine's in Georgia to Robert Porteous.
