Description
Tugboats towing coal barges were a frequent sight along the Kennebec River during the 1930s and 1940s.
Augusta is about 40 miles from the ocean at high tide. The river is shallow and the channel is narrow. Only experienced river pilots could guide tugboats with a fully loaded coal barges to the Stone & Cooper coal yard on the west side of the Kennebec River near Augusta.
The Pennypack barge from Philadelphia, was a large vessel that was maneuvered in a small space. The tugboat in this photograph must have been a regular on the Augusta waterfront, and therefore, someone who might have seen it in the 1940s will help us identify it.
