Description
This large brick building is Hollingsworth & Whitney Company was a pulp and paper company that owned one or more mills in Winslow. Hollingsworth & Whitney later became Scott Paper. The photographer is standing close to the intersection of Benton Ave & Herd Street looking towards the river and Waterville. Robert H. Gay, a seasonal resident of Biddeford and amateur photographer, took this photo around 1910.
In the background, a town and homes are visible on a hillside, and there could be a river or body of water nearby; the land around the building seems very sandy.
Gay worked as a photographer as a side business, producing portraits and postcards. He may have been paid to take this image by the owner or company.
