Description

Fishing was among the main industries of the residents of Biddeford Pool, known locally as, "the Pool," before it became a popular haven for tourists and seasonal residents.

Old Biddeford Pool boasted a large and productive "herring fleet," in addition to the various other sea-based trades. In the early 20th century the old and the new came together, as local fisherman and boat captains profited by hosting fishing parties for wealthy visitors from near and far. Photographers such as Robert Gay profited by documenting visits for the sportsmen.
