Elihu Washburne on winter activities and speeches, Hallowell, 1838

Description

Elihu Washburne (1816-1877) wrote to his brother, Algernon Sidney Washburn, from Hallowell, where he mentioned a bad speech he made, the defeat of Mr. Otis as Councilor, Maine's Governor Kent, and discussed money that was enclosed. 



Elihu Washburne was born in Livermore, in 1816. He attended Harvard Law School and moved to Illinois in 1840 to practice law. In 1852 he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and served the state of Illinois until 1869.

During the Grant Administration Washburne was appointed as the U.S. Minister to France. During his political career he formed friendships with Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant. Elihu Washburne died in 1887.



Algernon Sidney was in Boston when Elihu wrote him. Sidney later moved to Hallowell, and became the co-founder of The Bank of Hallowell.

John Otis (1801-1856) was born in Leeds. He went to Bowdoin College to study law, and graduated in 1823. He set up a practice in Hallowell in 1826. At the end of 1837 Elihu joined the Otis' law office as a student and studied there until 1838.



Edward Kent (1802-1877) was born in Concord, New Hampshire. He graduated from Harvard in 1821. He was the governor of Maine in 1838-1839 and 1841-1842. Elihu at that time had lived in Hallowell, a prominently Whig town. Elihu supported the governor, who was a Whig.
