Description
Elihu Washburne (1816-1877) wrote to Algernon Sidney Washburn from Hallowell. Elihu described his recent visit home, his schooling at Kent's Hill, and the Maine Legislature.
Elihu Benjamin Washburne was born on September 23, 1816 in Livermore. He became a lawyer and moved to Illinois. He was elected to the U.S House of Representatives in 1852. He served as a representative for Illinois until 1869. He was appointed as the U.S minister to France (1869-1877). He died October 22, 1887.
Algernon was in Boston when Elihu wrote to him. Algernon "Sid" Washburn was born in 1814. He moved to Boston to open his own store. By 1853 he had moved back to Maine to co-found the Bank of Hallowell. He died in 1879.
