Description
Elihu Washburn wrote to his to his brother, Algernon Sidney Washburn from Kent's Hill school
in East Livermore where he was studying law. He was also teaching school in Hartford. He eventually transferred to Dane's Law School to finish his law studies, and passed the bar.
Elihu eventually moved to Galena, Illinois and set up his own law practice where he added an ancestral "e" to Washburn, making it "Washburne". He was elected to the
House of Representatives and after serving his terms, was appointed as the Minister to France.
Algernon Sidney Washburn was Elihu's
older brother, who was a clerk at a dry goods store in Hallowell. Algernon
later moved to Boston and established a store called Shaw and
Washburn, then moved back and established the First National Bank
of Hallowell.
