Description
Elihu Washburne was a national politician during the mid-19th century, born and raised in Livermore. He was one of ten children born to Israel and Martha Benjamin Washburn. At an early age he decided to use the English spelling of his name by adding an "e" to the end of "Washburn."
Writing to his brother, Algernon Washburn, Elihu expressed regret at having to leave his job as a printer for the Kennebec Journal newspaper in Augusta and apprenticeship with editor Luther Severance due to medical reasons. He earned enough money to attend Wesleyan Seminary at Kents Hill and expressed his concern about catching the measles.
Though he came from humble beginnings, Elihu managed to further his education by attending Kents Hill School and Harvard Law School, and passing his bar exam before moving to Galena, Illinois.
In 1853, he was elected to Congress and eventually became a prominent leader of the Radical Republican Party. He was appointed as Secretary of State temporarily by President Grant, and served in that position for a grand total of five days.
